A MEDITATION ON THOUGHT AND REALITY
Over the past few days, I’ve felt an insistent pull to rewatch The Matrix. So I did—and as expected, deeper layers in the narrative began to surface. I’ve always thought of the film as a masterpiece: an uncannily precise metaphor for the human condition, a genius depiction of how our minds operate. It maps out a cycle I’ve been contemplating deeply: thought leads to feeling, which leads to action, which then manifests a version of reality—feeding back into another thought. A circular process of creation.
In this loop, everything begins with thought. Not just “I think, therefore I am,” but perhaps more accurately: I question, and therefore I wake up. Most people—like the characters trapped in the Matrix—exist in a numbed trance of survival, dreaming a dream of progress.
There’s a scene where Cypher, a defector from the resistance, chooses to return to the Matrix because he craves the illusion of comfort. He bites into a juicy steak, fully aware it isn’t real, but seduced nonetheless. That moment captures our collective addiction to the material: to certainty, gratification, and the visible layers of reality governed by our lower drives—safety, desire, identity.
But what if we could insert a pause into that cycle—a sliver of space between thought, feeling, and action? A breath. A witness. That pause is where transformation begins. It’s where we get to choose again. Adjust the thought, and you shift the feeling. Shift the feeling, and your action changes. Change your action, and you build a different world.
As an artist obsessed with circles—literal and metaphysical—I don’t see this loop as a trap. I see it as a portal. We are not victims of the cycle. We are the cycle. And once we own that, we reclaim authorship of our own reality.
That’s the real red pill.
