Where the Sky Kisses the Edge of the World

or: The Love Affair with the Horizon Line

My fascination with the horizon line began one perfect summer day.
I was sixteen, maybe seventeen.

A restless punk girl, boots scuffed from hitchhiking across a crumbling country,
I’d been dropped in the middle of nowhere—somewhere on the Great Polish Plain.
No people. No cars. Just two roads intersecting like a cosmic X at perfect right angles,
cutting through fields of wheat—endless wheat—
swaying golden and heavy with grasshoppers’ song and beetle whispers,
sprinkled with the red of poppies and the electric blue of cornflowers.

I stood at the centre of that crossroads, like I was waiting for something…
and then I began to spin slowly.
As far as my eyes could see, there was only wheat and sky—
blue and gold in majestic contrast—
and that one line where they touched.
Nothing else.

Something happened to me there.
It was a defining moment in my journey.
I encountered the mysterious—
and the portal between innocence and knowing suddenly opened.

An awareness flooded in:
I wasn’t just in the landscape—
I was the landscape.
Or maybe the landscape was me.

The experience was terrifying and thrilling at the same time—
like catching your reflection for the first time
and realising you’re real…

In my drawings, in my poems, through the camera lens—
it appears again and again.
Never just a mark across the page,
but a spine to build a body of awareness upon.

Observing it becomes an act of learning.
It whispers: this far, and no farther—for now.
And then: begin.

We cannot exist outside the Landscape,
and it becomes the echo of our internal weather—
flat calm or storm-lashed, open or obstructed—
it reflects our own psychic states.
We project ourselves onto it,
and imagine meaning where there is only line.

And beyond the horizon line
is where myth begins
and maps end…

…and then the bus to Bydgoszcz arrived.
